What Barry says
Barry says his Riverside deal came through Cannonball Adderley, and that he made Live at the Jazz Workshop on the West Coast with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes while he was in Cannonball’s band.
Barry thinks Live at the Jazz Workshop is in some ways the best thing he has ever done, because of the way he played together with Louis Hayes and Sam Jones. He likes it better than Barry Harris Plays Tadd Dameron, he thinks because it was recorded live, and he feels some engineers record better live than in the studio.
In his own words
When I listen to it, I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever done, in some kind of way. The way I played together with Louis Hayes and Sam Jones.
Personally, I like Live At The Jazz Workshop with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. I think it’s because it’s live.
I made my first record out on the West Coast, Live At the Jazz Workshop with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes while I was with Cannonball.

In the interviews and notes
Asked about signing with Riverside, Barry says it came through Cannonball Adderley: while in Cannonball’s band he made Live at the Jazz Workshop on the West Coast with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, after an earlier record for Argo.
When Panken says younger players treat Live at the Jazz Workshop as a bible of trio playing, Barry agrees it may be his best work, because of how he, Hayes and Jones played together.
Barry prefers Live at the Jazz Workshop to Barry Harris Plays Tadd Dameron, partly because it is live; he thinks some engineers record better live than in the studio.
Cleary hears At the Jazz Workshop as following the Bud Powell trio model, which needs bass and drums that keep a fierce, steady tempo without rushing and react instantly; he finds Jones and Hayes as tightly united as the rhythm sections on Bud’s own trio records.
