What Barry says

Barry’s Riverside contract came through Cannonball Adderley, and while he was in Cannonball’s band he recorded Live at the Jazz Workshop on the West Coast with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. He calls it his first record, then adds that he had already made a trio record for Argo in Chicago.

Listening back, Barry thinks the Jazz Workshop record may be the best thing he has done, because of the way he played together with Hayes and Jones. The three had been playing together for about three months.

When Panken names Barry Harris Plays Tadd Dameron as his favourite, Barry prefers Live at the Jazz Workshop with Jones and Hayes, partly because it is live: he feels he has never been recorded right in the studio, and the live records come closer to his sound.

In his own words

When I listen to it, I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever done, in some kind of way. The way I played together with Louis Hayes and Sam Jones.

Personally, I like Live At The Jazz Workshop with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. I think it’s because it’s live.
