What Barry says
Describing the soundtrack sessions for Clint Eastwood’s film about Charlie Parker, Barry says it was Lennie Niehaus who was conducting. He names him right after recalling a society dance band scene, in which the band had to fumble its playing as if Bird had just walked into the dance; Barry found the result perfect.
The sessions Barry describes were his and Walter Davis’s part of the soundtrack: playing along with Parker’s records with strings, to a click track, with a large orchestra (Barry was on Laura and April in Paris), plus society-band and rhythm-and-blues scenes.
In his own words
It was almost as if Charlie Parker had come to this dance or something... And so they started flubbing. So we had to really do the flubbing. Oh, it was perfect... So it was Lenny [Niehaus] was conducting.
