What Barry says
Barry names Jimmy Heath and Charles Davis as the horn players he featured at his most recent big concert, the yearly show for which he arranges music for a children’s choir, an adult choir, a big band and strings.
On the radio in 1988, Barry credits Bill Cosby with putting jazz on prime-time television for the first time, and recalls Art Blakey on the show and, he thinks, Jimmy Heath.
Asked which musicians he remembers from the dances of his teens, besides Charlie Parker, Barry recalls going once to see Milt Jackson, and names Jimmy Heath and maybe Max in the same breath.

In his own words
I generally have featured horn players. At the last concert I featured Jimmy Heath and Charles Davis.
We went to see Milt Jackson one time with Jimmy Heath and maybe Max, or somebody.
That’s the first time jazz has been on primetime television... Jimmy Heath? Was it Jimmy Heath?

In the interviews and notes
Milkowski reports that Barry’s yearly Symphony Space show doubles as an awards night, where Barry gives his own prize, a ‘Barry’, to people who have done good for jazz. Jimmy Heath and Walter Bishop Jr. had won one in earlier years but only lately picked theirs up.

Panken writes that from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s Barry made many records for producer Don Schlitten, under his own name and backing horn players such as Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Heath and Sonny Stitt, whom he pushed to some of their best playing.
