What Barry says

The interviewer puts to Barry an idea she credits to Coles, which the translated caption renders, muddled, as bebop being like a bass player. Barry says he thinks it is true: when he plays with the tap dancer Jimmy Slyde, it is like playing with a bass player.

Continuing that answer, Barry says he makes his horn players listen to the click of the keys being pressed down, because that sound is rhythm. When he plays, he says, he does not think of himself as playing at all but as being Jimmy Slyde, tapping.
