What Barry says
Going through his discography with Ted Panken, Barry recalls that after joining Max Roach’s band in 1956 he recorded with Thad Jones and then, the same July, with the Hank Mobley Quartet, including a Savoy date on July 23rd. He finds it odd that he made more records that month than in the year.
In his own words
Then in July again I recorded with the Hank Mobley Quartet. It’s weird. The same year, July 14th, July 20th with Hank Mobley, then with Hank Mobley on July 23rd for Savoy.

Panken writes that apart from a few months on the road with Max Roach after Clifford Brown’s death in 1956, when he made sideman records with Thad Jones for Blue Note and Hank Mobley for Prestige, Barry spent the rest of the 1950s in Detroit.
Reminded by Panken of Barry’s 1956 burst of recording with Hank Mobley and Thad Jones, producer Don Schlitten says that was probably when he first heard Barry, on record.

A forum member who uses Barry’s method to develop transcribed material calls Mobley, like Dexter, a simpler second-generation version of Bird’s phrasing and a good place to start, and says he now hears Mobley’s bop ‘words’ at tempo.
