What Barry says
Before his first Riverside record, made live on the West Coast while he was with Cannonball Adderley, Barry made a record on Argo. He went from Detroit to Chicago with Frank Gant and Will Austin and they recorded with Sonny Stitt; when that session was over, someone suggested they make a trio record, Barry agreed, and they made one.
Going through his discography in a 2000 phone interview, Barry dates the Argo recordings with Sonny Stitt and with his own trio to 1958; he does not name the players there.
Trying to remember who played bass in the trio he had with Elvin Jones in Detroit after Elvin left the Army, Barry rules out Ali Jackson (the newer transcript hears ‘Ollie’) and suggests one of the Jacksons, or Will Austin, adding that there were a lot of musicians around who could play.
In his own words
I went to Chicago from Detroit with Frank Gant and Will Austin, and we recorded with Sonny Stitt there.
after that was over the cat said, “Why don’t you all make a trio record?” I said, “Okay,” and we made a trio record.
Or it might have been, oh, Will Austin. A lot of cats, you know, there were a lot of cats that could play.

In the interviews and notes
