What Barry says

Asked whether Bird had a big sound in person, Barry remembers a night at the Crystal when Konitz had come in and was sitting in with Bird, with another alto player there too (the transcript queries the name, Emperor Nero). Bird, at the back near the kitchen, simply started playing from there, and his sound was huge.

The Crystal Bar was one of the Detroit places where Barry himself sat in with Bird when Bird came through town.

When Panken reads a liner note saying that, as house pianist at the Rouge Lounge, Barry’s on-the-job training included working with Konitz, Lester Young, Roy Eldridge and Ben Webster, Barry is not sure of those names. The ones he remembers are Lester Young and Flip Phillips.

In his own words

I remember one time when he [Bird] was at the Crystal, he was at the back of the room when Lee Konitz had come in and was sitting in with him.

I don’t know about all those names you called. I know about Lester Young and Flip Phillips. That’s what I remember.
