What Barry says
Talking about horn players with big sounds, Barry turns from Bird to Gene Ammons, who would play from the back of the Club Valley. Ammons always let Barry sit in with him, and when Barry was very young he would even have Junior Mance step aside so that Barry could play.
Barry says he always loved to see Ammons come to town, because he was one player Barry could really sit in with.
In his own words
He always let me sit in with him. When I was very young, he used to make Junior Mance get up and let me sit in with him.
