What Barry says
Asked why Detroit produced so many musicians, Barry credits music in the public schools. Few of the young players could afford instruments of their own, so they used the school’s: Ernie Farrow took the school bass, the drums came from school too, and they went to gigs by streetcar.
In his own words
Most of us were too poor to have instruments of our own. So the bass player, Ernie Farrow, he’d borrow the school bass, we’d borrow the school drums, and go to a gig on the streetcar.
