What Barry says
Barry credits Emmitt Slay, a guitarist, with getting him his union card. Slay had a show in Cleveland on the same bill as Mantan Moreland, and once Barry had joined the union he went there.
He tells it in a run of early jobs: one of his first gigs, with Lewis Brown and Willis ‘Gator’ Jackson, which went to Gary, Indiana; the union card and the Cleveland trip through Slay; and going out with Ruth Brown to play shows and shake dances.

In his own words
I got in the Union through a guitar player named Emmitt Slay. He was doing a show opposite Mantan Moreland in Cleveland, so I got in the union and went to Cleveland.
