What Barry says

Barry’s first big concert had ten singers, ten strings and four guest soloists. He thinks these were Slide Hampton, Clifford Jordan, Tommy Turrentine and perhaps Harold Vick.

Barry Harris, Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program ¶312

The concert grew out of a talk at a restaurant with, Barry thinks, Clifford and some others. When someone said he would love to play with strings, Barry asked why they should wait for someone else to arrange it, and said he would give a strings concert himself, though he knew nothing about strings.

Barry Harris, Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program ¶312

Barry calls that first concert his most successful ever: he sold enough tickets by himself, and afterwards his concerts grew to fifty singers, fifteen strings and a big band.

When Ted Panken recalls the fine group Barry had with Clifford in the 1980s and their playing of Bean and the Boys, Barry says he loved that tune with Clifford; there were a few songs the two loved to play, among them Dizzy’s I Waited For You.

In his own words

Oh yes. I loved that song with Clifford. There were a few songs Clifford and I loved to play. We loved to play “I Waited For You,” which was Diz’s song.

‘Cause we were sitting at a restaurant, I think it was Clifford, some others, and we got to talking, and somebody said, “I sure would like to play with strings.”

I think the guest soloists were Slide Hamilton [Hampton], Jordan – Clifford Jordan, Tommy Turrentine, who could be the fourth?
