What Barry says
Barry left Detroit in 1960 with Cannonball Adderley and stayed mostly in New York after that. As he remembers it, Bobby Timmons had been Cannonball’s pianist and was going out on his own to work with a trio, so Cannonball had Barry join him.
In his own words
I guess Bobby Timmons was with him, and Bobby was going out on his own to do some trio stuff, so he had me come join him.

Among the pianists who came to Detroit looking for its players: Sonny Clark, Bobby Timmons (the old captions had ‘Bobby Turner’s’)
In the interviews and notes
Barry had not played with Cannonball in Detroit, but they knew each other from Cannonball’s visits. When his pianist Bobby Timmons left to do trio work, Cannonball had Barry join him, and from then on Barry stayed mostly in New York.
When Bud Powell came back to New York in 1964, musicians lined the door at Birdland to greet him, Barry among them. Timmons stood at the front, took Bud’s hand and kissed it, and the others followed his lead.
